Sustainability & Our Circular Economy Commitment
Sustainability & Our Circular Economy Commitment
Refurbished Office Furniture UK is built on a simple idea: the best environmental decision you can make when buying office furniture is to not manufacture new furniture at all. Every chair we restore and resell is a chair that doesn't go to landfill, and a chair that doesn't require new raw materials, new manufacturing energy, or new freight miles.
The Environmental Cost of New Office Furniture
Manufacturing a new premium ergonomic chair generates approximately 40–80kg of CO₂ per unit, depending on the model, materials, and supply chain. Across the UK's office furniture market — which replaces millions of chairs every year — this represents a substantial and largely avoidable carbon burden. The majority of those replaced chairs are not worn out. They are cleared from offices because companies move, restructure, or update specifications. The furniture has years of useful life remaining. It just needs a new owner.
What We Do Instead
We intercept premium office furniture at the point of clearance — from corporate relocations, building redevelopments, and end-of-lease fit-outs across the UK — and return it to productive use. Our refurbishment process extends the service life of each piece by many years, displacing the need for new manufacturing and keeping high-quality materials in circulation rather than in landfill.
This is circular economy thinking applied practically. The chairs we sell were built to last 15–20 years. We make sure they do.
CO₂ Savings Per Purchase
By choosing a refurbished chair from us instead of a new equivalent, you avoid approximately:
- Herman Miller Aeron: ~70kg CO₂ saved vs new manufacture
- Steelcase Leap V2: ~60kg CO₂ saved vs new manufacture
- Humanscale Freedom: ~55kg CO₂ saved vs new manufacture
- Standard task chair: ~35–45kg CO₂ saved vs new manufacture
Estimates based on published lifecycle assessment data from chair manufacturers and independent environmental research. Figures represent avoided manufacturing emissions only and do not include avoided logistics or end-of-life impacts.
The Brands We Stock Are Already Leaders
We deliberately stock brands with strong environmental credentials — because the sustainability of a refurbished product is built on the sustainability of the original. Humanscale chairs are GREENGUARD Gold certified and manufactured with a deep commitment to environmental impact reduction. Steelcase's Think chair contains up to 44% recycled content and is 99% recyclable at end of life. Herman Miller has published lifecycle assessments for all its major products since the 1990s. Choosing a refurbished version of these products amplifies their environmental credentials further.
ESG & Sustainability Reporting
For organisations with net-zero commitments, B Corp certification, Scope 3 emissions reporting requirements, or circular economy disclosures, we can provide:
- Written confirmation of the refurbished status of your purchase
- Estimated CO₂ avoidance calculations for your order
- Documentation suitable for inclusion in sustainability reports and ESG disclosures
Contact us after your order to request sustainability documentation. We're familiar with the requirements of common reporting frameworks and happy to support your team.
Our Workshop
Our UK refurbishment facility operates with minimal waste. Replaced components — castors, gas lifts, armrest pads — are segregated for appropriate recycling or disposal. Packaging materials used in delivery are selected for recyclability. We are continuously reviewing our operations to reduce our own environmental footprint.
The Bottom Line
Buying refurbished is not a compromise. It is the rational choice for buyers who care about quality, value, and environmental responsibility simultaneously. Premium ergonomic chairs are built to last decades — and with our help, that's exactly what they do.
